The Experiences and Perceptions of Young People on Their Relationship to the Natural Environment: A Western Australian Perspective

Jane Hutchinson, Sipho Sibanda

The relationship of youth with the natural environment is of utmost importance. This qualitative study investigated how 21 young people in Western Australia perceive and navigate their connection with the natural world. Data were gathered through four focus groups, one held in person and three online, and analysed through interpretive thematic analysis. Guided by ecological systems theory and eco-social work, the analysis identified four interconnected themes: conceptualising nature and environment, technology and wellbeing, school environment, and intergenerational communication. Participants portrayed nature as a source of tranquillity, connection, and personal strength, whilst also acknowledging obstacles that limit their engagement. The findings underscore the value of embedding ecological thinking into policy and practice, highlighting the interdependence between young people’s well-being and environmental sustainability. Recognising young people as capable contributors to environmental change enhances their sense of agency, belonging, and purpose. The study proposed key elements of holistic wellbeing and the foundation for resilient, sustainable communities.
