The experience of the work of art: Contemporary art and queer perespectives

Vlatko Ilic

In this paper, we will look into the experience of the work of contemporary art with regard to the legacy of avant-garde and Bürger’s understanding of the vanishing experience in terms of the social subsystems in general. Through the analysis of examples from the periods of avant-garde and neo-avant-garde, as well as contemporary art from Serbia, we will elaborate how the experience, which consists of sensations and reflections that can induce new living practices, does not vanish when it comes to the present-day works of art, if - in accordance with Debord’s theory of the dérive and Ahmed’s queer phenomenology, that very experience is affectively disorientating.
