The Evolving Self
Kristina J. DoubetMy most recent self-studies have revealed that a treasured routine – my reading accountability system – is no longer effective. I have used this system throughout my time teaching young adolescents in middle and high school and have adapted it for use in the university classroom. It has afforded me the opportunity to interact with students individually while checking for understanding and providing immediate feedback. Today’s learners have challenged that system, however, and sent me on a road of reformation and discovery. This paper chronicles my attempt to adapt my system to the needs of today’s learners while holding onto its most precious parts. It shares what survived, what was amended, and what was culled, some of which involved my teaching practices but more of which revolved around my sense of self. I hope that my findings – and more importantly, my journey – will help others grappling with navigating our changing educational landscape.
