The era of continuous data is now: wearables and artificial intelligence

Anthony G. Pompa, Na Le Dang, Jennifer N. Avari Silva

The recent rapid growth of wearable biometric technologies has enabled the continuous acquisition of physiological data. Clinicians now have access to a vast amount of data collected during their patients’ daily lives. Coupled with advances in edge and cloud artificial intelligence (AI), this information has expanded opportunities for early diagnosis, risk stratification, and personalized medicine. Continuous monitoring captures circadian and long-term physiological patterns that were previously missed, while AI models increasingly leverage this multimodal data. With thoughtful and deliberate attention to relevance of the data, prediction targets, and regulatory oversight, wearable technologies coupled with AI have the potential to redefine individualized and population level care.
