The Effects Of Applying Air Cooling With Copper Tube System On The Thermal Management Of Concave Battery Packs

Ferhat Akkuş, Mehmet Zerrakki Işık
Electric vehicles are rapidly becoming a key component of sustainable transportation technologies. One of the critical factors directly affecting their performance and safety is the effective thermal management of battery packs. Inadequate thermal control can lead to reduced battery lifespan and increased safety risks. In this context, the present study comprehensively investigates the thermal performance of copper pipe-assisted air cooling systems integrated into battery packs with concave cell arrangement geometry. Both numerical and experimental methods were employed to analyze the effects of varying pipe numbers and air velocities on the battery temperature distribution. The results demonstrated that multi-pipe systems provide more uniform temperature distribution and enhanced cooling efficiency compared to single-pipe configurations. Particularly, the two-pipe system emerges as a balanced and practical solution in terms of both performance and system complexity. This study offers valuable insights for the design of optimized thermal management systems ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electric vehicle battery packs. Furthermore, the developed numerical modeling approach is adaptable to various battery geometries and operating conditions, contributing to accelerated and reliable design processes.
