The Effect of Ozone Gel as Adjunct Treatment in Patients of Periodontitis According to Clinical Parameter: A Split-Mouth Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Background:
Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition that causes oral bacterial plaque to destroy tooth-supporting tissues. Ozone gel has been offered as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP).
Objective:
The current study sought to determine the effects of ozone gel as an addition to traditional periodontal therapy on clinical parameters. This gel exhibits positive benefits in addition to its antibacterial properties.
Materials and Methods:
The research included 21 periodontitis patients. Two groups were established, one of which was a blinded split-mouth design, with a total of 58 periodontal pockets. In the test group, 30 periodontal pockets received treatment with ozone gel and root planning and scaling. In contrast, the control group had just 28 periodontal pockets treated with these procedures. The gel was administered twice at baseline and once a month after treatment. Records were documented for the relative attachment level, plaque index (PLI), and probing pocket depth (PPD).
Results:
The test sites exhibited a more pronounced decrease in PLI and an increase in clinical attachment in comparison with the control sites. However, this variation was only significant throughout the first month. No significant change was seen after 1 or 3 months. The ozone gel greatly lowered PPD in the first month, but there was no significant reduction after 3 months.
Conclusion:
Adding ozone gel as a supplementary treatment to SRP does not provide any statistically significant advantage in comparison with SRP alone after 3 months.
