The Eastern Horizon of Politics

Givi Bolotashvili

This article surveys political dynamics across the vast region from the Gulf of Suez to Xinjiang, treating it as a modern Balkan marked by contested borders, ethnic tensions and external intervention. Drawing on demographic data, historical episodes (from the Arab states’ formation to the 2003 Iraq invasion) and case studies (Israel-Palestine, Kurdish dispersion, Kashmir, Libya, Sudan, and Afghanistan), the author analyses how nationalism, foreign domination, resource dependency and religious movements shape instability. The research links past upheavals to contemporary vulnerabilities, arguing that unresolved historical grievances and uneven development underpin the region’s persistent volatility and uncertain geopolitical future.
