The Duke of Wellington and Russian-British Relations on the Greek Issue in the Late 1820s

The article analyzes the course and features of the diplomatic contacts between the Russian Empire and Great Britain on the issue of granting Greece independence in the late 1820s. Special attention is paid to the position of the British Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington, on the Greek issue. The Duke’s attempts to reduce the influence of the Russian Empire in the Balkans were unsuccessful. Thanks to the efforts of Russian diplomacy, Greece received favorable terms for its independence. An external factor played a significant role in this process: Russia's victory in the war against the Ottoman Empire in 1828—1829 and the subsequent signing of the Treaty of Adrianople. The authors relied on previously unused archival documents to prepare this article.
