The Curriculum Artist: Exploring Janet Miller’s Notions of Curriculum Theory, Pedagogy and Praxis Through an Interrogation of Her Entanglings

Joyce Maxwell

Abstract

This chapter explores Janet Miller’s theoretical and conceptual teachings of curriculum theory through an interrogation of what she identifies as entanglings, those visual renderings of her teachings, pedagogy, and theorizations, which symbolize and conceptualize her life’s work. It is through Miller’s use of color, texture, line, and form, as well as her organization of space, that we might read, see, and feel curriculum and teaching as material and discursive layerings embedded with multiple meanings. Created by Miller, these entanglings exist as material artifacts that express her embodied pedagogy. The chapter touches upon art theory, textual analysis, reflection, poetry, and visual art as a way of engaging with and honoring the teachings and conceptual work of Miller.
