The Concept of Biomimicry in the Form Determination Phase of Architectural Facade Design

Berfin Yılmaz, Ümit Arpacıoğlu

Throughout the history of architecture, nature has served as both a source of inspiration and a structural reference for designers. This reference has now entered the literature under the headings of biomimicry and biomimetic design, transforming into a systematic design methodology. Biomimicry is an approach that offers different opportunities in the design of facades, an architectural component. This study examines biomimicry in the form-determining process of architectural facade design through application examples and design methodologies. By investigating the inclusion of biomimicry in the form-determining phase of the conventional facade design process, the study addresses the question, "At what point does the biomimicry approach fit into the form-determining phase of architectural facade design?" The study concludes that biomimicry should be integrated into architectural practice not only as a formal aesthetic preference but also as a form-determining tool that optimizes parameters such as climate control, daylight management, energy efficiency, and user comfort.
