The Collaborative Wellness Framework: A Culturally Responsive Approach to School-based Mindfulness Implementation
Susan J. DavisThe Collaborative Wellness Framework (CWF) offers a systems-level model for advancing wellbeing and resilience in schools and communities, derived from insights drawn from a district-wide case study on the implementation of a school-based mindfulness program. Grounded in cross-sector leadership, the CWF integrates insights from three complementary models: Ishimaru’s (2020) Equitable Collaboration Framework, Epstein’s (2019) Six Types of Involvement, and the Communities That Care (CTC) prevention system (Hawkins et al., 2002). These frameworks inform eight constructs: communication, family engagement, collaboration, adaptive leadership, culture and values, educating, data-based decision-making, and community partnerships. The CWF positions wellbeing as a community-owned system embedded into existing structures, guiding leaders to navigate entrenched norms and political sensitivities while building trust across the community and reframing wellbeing as a collective responsibility.
