The CHEER Framework: A New Approach to Assessing Digital Community Health in Games

Digital games have evolved from isolated entertainment products into dynamic social platforms where millions of players form meaningful communities and relationships. However, our current understanding of, and approaches to, assessing community health in gaming environments fail to capture the complex social dynamics that determine whether gaming communities thrive or decline over time. Drawing on public health indicator traditions and cultural studies research on gaming communities, this paper introduces the CHEER Framework – a comprehensive approach to measuring Community Health in gaming environments through three interconnected pillars: Engagement, Ecosystem, and Resilience. CHEER provides a holistic assessment tool that recognizes gaming communities as complex social ecosystems with unique characteristics including player identities, collaborative objectives, and integrated social-gameplay mechanics. This framework is grounded in the recognition that community health is not a neutral or a universal condition but shaped by social dynamics, power structures, and norms that define a community. Its flexible implementation model (including a tiered implementation approach to support studios at varying levels of data infrastructure) allows adaptation across gaming genres and platforms while maintaining consistent measurement standards to enable cross-industry learning and benchmarking. In addition to broadening and streamlining community health metrics, the CHEER framework addresses three converging imperatives driving the need for sophisticated community health measurement: increasing regulatory scrutiny around user safety, rapid global expansion of gaming communities, and games' emergence as primary sources of social connection. By shifting focus from reactive problem-solving to proactive ecosystem stewardship, the CHEER Framework aims to enable teams to identify early warning signs of community decline, deploy targeted interventions, and track long-term impact of community development initiatives. This approach transforms community health assessment from subjective evaluation to objective, data-driven decision-making, providing the foundation necessary for sustainable digital community building in an increasingly connected gaming landscape.
