The Authenticity of Demosthenes 13 On the Organization

Antonio Iacoviello

Abstract

This appendix addresses the question of the authenticity of Demosthenes 13 (On the Organization). It reassesses the proposal that the speech is a later rhetorical fabrication dating to the early Hellenistic period and associated with the political milieu of Demochares of Leuconoe. Through an analysis of the speech’s historical setting and rhetorical strategies, it argues that there are no firm grounds for such a reattribution. Instead, the arguments, concerns, and policy assumptions of the speech align closely with the political and financial debates of the late 350s bce. On this basis, the appendix concludes that On the Organization is best understood as a genuine work of Demosthenes rather than a later composition.
