Abstract

Objectives:

In this study, we intended to study the frequency of medication adherence among psychiatric patients attending emergencies and to study its relationship with disability of the patients.

Methods:

We studied 162 patients at the Hospital for Mental Health, Vadodara, Gujarat, India. The questionnaires included Medication Adherence Rating Scales (MARS) and the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0).

Results:

Our 85 (52.46%) study patients were nonadherent to the psychiatric medications. We found significant nonadherence due to poor behaviors ( p < 0.01) and a negative attitude toward psychiatric medications ( p < 0.01) in emergency patients. Furthermore, overall disability in psychiatric patients attending emergencies ( p < 0.001) was significantly associated with medication adherence.

Conclusion:

More than 50% of patients were nonadherent to psychiatric medications, and there was an inverse relationship of medication adherence with disability of psychiatric patients attending emergencies.
