The artwork as a modal system: Reasoning in creation
Srdjan Sarovic, Una PopovicThe research focuses on analyzing the reasoning that takes place during the creation of an artwork, understood as a modal system. The term creation of the artwork refers to the entire process of the artwork’s coming into being, encompassing both the reasoning about the artwork in becoming and its subsequent material realization. Since the artist contemplates the inner necessity of the artwork prior to the act of its material composition, reasoning in artistic creation is here examined from the standpoint of modal epistemology. More precisely, the artist first considers the necessities that determine the artwork as a specific artwork. By delineating these necessities, a logical space is opened within which the internal logical relations constitutive of the artwork are revealed. The necessities, as constitutive components of the artwork, possess variable features. These variable features outline the field of the possible: each has changeable values, while the range of possible values is constrained by the necessities of the artwork itself. Ultimately, reasoning in the process of creation attains its verification through the artwork’s material actualization. The analysis of reasoning in artistic creation will be demonstrated through the example of musical art.
