The Application of Debt-Nature Swaps in Reducing the Debt Burden of Developing Countries
Hakkı M. Ay, Adnan Söylemez, Duygu İlkhan Söylemez, Nihal Güneş AyThe inadequacy of domestic savings in developing countries necessitates external borrowing. The debt of these countries is steadily increasing proportionally within the global debt burden. High external financing costs and lagging social investments are driving these countries towards alternative financing methods. Developing countries are caught between economic growth targets and environmental imperatives such as climate change and biodiversity loss. Their external debt burden prevents them from allocating budgets for sustainable development investments. Debt-Nature Swap stands out as an innovative financial mechanism that both alleviates debt crises and provides financing for environmental protection. Furthermore, the application of debt-nature swaps will incentivize debtor countries to repay their debts in order to protect and ensure environmental sustainability. This study analyzes the debt burden of developing countries, the functioning mechanism of debt-nature swaps, global application examples, advantages, and key challenges encountered.
