Tectonic and A-Tectonic in Digital Documentation: A Model for Analyzing the Built Environment
Emine Akcan ŞirinThis study examines two distinct construction logics tectonic and a-tectonic that are superimposed within an architectural complex located around Nevşehir Castle in Cappadocia. The study addresses the a-tectonic spatial configuration of the subterranean troglodytic space formed by carving the existing rock mass into a void, as well as the tectonic configuration of the above-ground masonry structure. The research shows that three-dimensional documentation reveals the spatial continuity between the uper and lower levels a continuity that remains invisible in traditional two-dimensional representations by connecting these two spatial configurations. In this study, the tectonic aproaches of Bötticher, Semper, and Frampton are reevaluated in light of the a-tectonic conceptualization of troglodytic spaces. The case study focuses on an ancient structure at Nevşehir Castle that contains both underground and aboveground spaces. The study area is identified using point cloud analysis. By making the troglodytic layer visible, digital documentation also contributes to reassessing the cultural heritage value of the superstructure and the registration process. The study argues that digital documentation is not merely a record but a tool that generates architectural value.
