Technology and Transformation: Redefining Higher Education for Generations Z and Alpha

James O'Farrell, Carla Weaver

This paper examines the transformative impact of technology on higher education in the post-pandemic era, with a focus on the learning needs of Generation Z and Generation Alpha as digital natives. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of online and blended learning, prompting institutions to rapidly integrate technologies such as learning management systems, collaboration platforms, video tools, gamification, digital libraries, and artificial intelligence (AI). Drawing on faculty experiences, institutional practices, and a targeted literature review, this study explores how these technologies reshape teaching, learning, and student engagement. Findings indicate that while technology enhances flexibility, accessibility, and personalization, it also introduces challenges related to faculty adaptation, student engagement, and mental health. The paper highlights the need for continuous faculty development, intentional integration of technology, and institutional support systems that address both pedagogical effectiveness and well-being. It concludes that a balanced approach—combining technological innovation with human-centered teaching—is essential to meeting the evolving needs of emerging student generations and sustaining effective higher education in a rapidly changing environment.
