Tech-Savvy Culture of Gen Y Teachers and their Creative Teaching in Public Secondary Schools

Joselyn Dayon

This study examined the relationship between tech-savvy culture and creative teaching among Generation Y teachers in public secondary schools in Cluster One, Division of Davao City. A quantitative correlational design was used with 156 Generation Y teachers selected from a population of 255 teachers. Data were collected through validated survey instruments that measured tech-savvy culture across information technology fluency, ways of thinking, problem-solving, communication, and social media-networking skills, as well as creative teaching across reflective, imaginative, connected, collaborative, and inquisitive practices. The instruments were validated by experts and yielded a Cronbach's alpha of 0.84. Descriptive results showed a high level of tech-savvy culture (M = 4.05, SD = 0.68) and a high level of creative teaching (M = 3.91, SD = 0.69). Pearson correlation showed a significant high positive relationship between tech-savvy culture and creative teaching (r = 0.814, p = 0.014). Regression analysis also showed that the tech-savvy culture domains significantly predicted creative teaching, F = 31.45, p = 0.001. Problem-solving and social media-networking skills recorded the highest beta coefficients, followed by information technology fluency, ways of thinking, and communication. The findings indicate that a stronger tech-savvy culture is associated with more creative teaching among Generation Y teachers.
