Teaching of Reading as a Component of Communication Arts in Public Elementary Schools of Dupax Del Norte II District, Dupax Del Norte, Nueva Vizcaya

Reading instruction is a vital component of communication arts, as it develops learners' literacy skills and supports academic achievement across learning areas. This study assessed the teaching of reading as a component of communication arts in public elementary schools in the Dupax Del Norte II District, Dupax Del Norte, Nueva Vizcaya. Specifically, it examined teachers' profiles, methods, instructional approaches, strategies and techniques, teaching competencies, availability of instructional materials, problems encountered, and remedial strategies employed in reading instruction. A descriptive research design was utilized using a researcher-developed questionnaire that was validated by experts and tested for reliability. Frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and standard deviation were used to analyze the collected data. The findings revealed that teachers frequently employed effective reading methods, instructional approaches, and strategies, possessed adequate teaching competencies, and regularly utilized available instructional materials to support literacy instruction. Although teachers encountered moderately serious challenges in teaching reading, they consistently implemented remedial strategies to address learners' reading difficulties. The results indicate that teachers are committed to delivering effective reading instruction despite existing challenges. The study highlights the importance of continuous professional development, adequate instructional resources, and strengthened school support to further enhance the quality of reading instruction. Based on the findings, an enhancement program is proposed to improve teachers' competencies and the implementation of reading instruction in communication arts.
