Teaching militant cinema: Pedagogical practices and methodological issues1
Sébastien LayerleIn this article, I share my experience teaching political and activist cinema at the university level over the past twenty years, focusing on the importance I place on transmitting this field as an object of research. I explore with students the specific challenges of these experiences (access to sources and witnesses), and I provide them, as much as possible, with methods that enable them to contribute to the development of this knowledge. I draw on the various teaching methods I have experimented with (introductory courses at the undergraduate level, research seminars, master classes and thesis supervision) and also engage with other teacher–researchers who have taught these contents.
