Neighbourhood matters: a Cu _x O/TiO ₂ nanocomposite containing in situ generated Cu ⁺ in the neighbourhood of Ti ³⁺ is developed. This tandem catalyst generates O ₂ and CH ₃ –OH by concurrent utilization of both holes and electrons.
