Tactical tendencies in 3x3 and 5x5 basketball: A comparative study

Bayesian methods were used to estimate mean parameters for game actions and team’s efficiency. Chi-square tests were used to analyze the frequencies of game action types, and court zone distributions. Results revealed the mean number of Space Creation Dynamics (SCDs, offensive actions) per possession was significantly higher in 5x5 than 3x3 for both women (5x5W: 2.55 [95% CI: 2.41, 2.69] vs. 3x3W: 1.90 [1.82, 1.98]) and men (5x5M: 2.46 [2.33, 2.59] vs. 3x3M: 1.95 [1.88, 2.03]). Court zone usage for SCDs showed significant association (p < 0.001), with 5x5 men emphasizing perimeter zones (e.g., TOP 28.3%) while 3x3 groups favored inside-arc areas. SCD types also varied significantly (p < 0.001), despite the prevalence of pick and screen (73–81% of all SCDs). Defensive responses to pick and screen also showed significant group differences, with 3x3 teams relying more on ‘switch’. Offensive efficiency (points per possession - ppp) showed men consistently outscoring women (e.g., 3x3M: 0.61 [0.57–0.64] vs. 3x3W: 0.53 [0.50–0.56]), while sports showed no significant difference. Coaches should apply these results by shifting 3x3 training focus away from complex perimeter-based sequences typical of 5x5 and toward performing pick and screen combined with scoring attempts within the arc. Defensively, players should be prepared to efficiently switch defense while accounting for potential mismatches.
