Studies on traditional martial arts have often focused on techniques, historical development, or health benefits, while their role as systems of cultural symbolism has received comparatively less attention. This article examines the concepts of qi in Taijiquan and righteous spirit in Tan Khanh Ba Tra martial arts to explore how cultural values are constructed, maintained, and transmitted through martial movement. The study employs document analysis combined with a cultural-symbolic approach. The findings indicate that qi reflects a worldview emphasizing harmony between humans and nature in Chinese culture, whereas righteous spirit embodies moral principles, communal solidarity, and social responsibility in Vietnamese culture. Although rooted in different martial traditions, both concepts function as cultural symbols that contribute to shaping collective identities and sustaining cultural continuity. By comparing a representative Chinese martial art with a traditional Vietnamese martial lineage, the study proposes an understanding of martial arts as a space for the production, preservation, and regeneration of cultural meaning. In doing so, it contributes to expanding intercultural approaches to the study of martial arts in East Asia.
