Systems Thinking: A Scientific Interpretation of the Holistic Principle in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Maria Stella Burgio, Francesco Gonella

Abstract:

This paper explores the integration of systems thinking (ST) with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), offering a novel interpretation of the Chinese holistic principle. The study begins by examining theoretical underpinnings and current practical applications of ST. Then, it delves into the philosophical roots of TCM, tracing its origins in Daoism and highlighting its key principles such as qi, yin-yang, and Wu Xing . A comparative analysis elucidates the concept of holism in both ST and TCM, highlighting synergies and divergences. To illustrate this synergy, a case study explores the body as a system, juxtaposing holistic TCM and scientific systemic representations. The study concludes by highlighting the potential of interpreting TCM using modern quantitative concepts from ST, at the same time offering new insights into approaches to medical practices. Overall, the proposed interdisciplinary approach seeks to enrich our understanding of holistic medicine from both traditional and modern perspectives, inspiring future research endeavors.
