Synthesis of Dialkylsulfones from Alkyl Halides using Sodium Dithionite

A transition metal-free approach for the synthesis of dialkyl sulfones has been developed using sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4), an inexpensive inorganic sulfite salt. In this transformation, Na2S2O4 serves a dual role as both a single-electron reductant and a sulfur dioxide (SO2) source. Control experiments indicate that the reaction proceeds via a radical pathway. This methodology is characterized by its operational simplicity and utility in late-stage functionalization, offering a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional transition-metal-catalyzed couplings.
