Synthesis of a Zinc(II) Complex from a 2,2′-Thiodiphenol Derivative and Its Guest Inclusion Modes in the Solid State

The reaction of the monohydroxymethyl derivative of 2,2′-thiodiphenol with Zn(OAc)2 yielded a zinc(II) complex. The complex comprised four ligands and four Zn2+ ions, resembling a head-to-head connection of two p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arenes. Depending on the recrystallization solvents, different types of inclusion crystals were obtained: the inclusion of guest molecules in the cavity of complex, the inclusion of guest molecules in the channels between complexes, and the inclusion of guest molecules by coordination with Zn2+ and hydrogen bonding with the ligands. It was found that the crystals of this complex exhibit the properties of both cyclic host crystals and metal complexes.
