This study aims to investigate the relationships among green knowledge management (GKM), green intellectual capital (GIC), artificial intelligence capability (AIC), green innovation (GI) and sustainable performance (SP) among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey data were collected from 378 managers of SMEs in Vietnam’s Southern Key Economic Region and analysed using partial least squares-structural equation modelling to examine the proposed theory extending model and its direct and indirect relationships.
Findings
GKM was positively associated with all three dimensions of GIC and with AIC. Green human capital (GHC) and green structural capital (GSC) were positively associated with SP, whereas green relational capital (GRC) showed no significant direct association. GHC, GRC, GSC and AIC were all positively associated with GI, which was positively associated with SP. Mediation analysis further showed that GI partially mediated the relationships of GHC and GSC with SP, while the relationship between GRC and SP operated indirectly through GI. AIC was also indirectly associated with SP through GI.
Originality/value
This study extends the knowledge-based view by integrating GKM, GIC and AIC within a unified framework explaining GI and SP. It identifies GKM as an important knowledge foundation associated with green intellectual resources and AIC, while demonstrating that GI provides a significant pathway through which GIC dimensions and AIC are associated with SP.
