ABSTRACT

A hallmark of quantum materials is their strong response to external stimuli, which makes them attractive for technological applications. In particular, when modest perturbations can drive a system between two electronic states, this can be used in memory and switching device applications. Here, we show that the superconducting transition temperature, , in a copper oxide superconductor can be dramatically altered by applying compressive uniaxial strain. This sensitivity suggests a practical route to switching superconductivity on and off. Such control could be realized by integrating superconductors with piezoelectric substrates, providing a platform to engineer superconducting devices whose state is tuned simply by strain.
