Swedish cinema 2000–25
Joel FrykholmThis article offers an overview of key developments in Swedish cinema from 2000 to 2025. Aiming to capture the complexity and multifaceted character of the national cinema, the article addresses aesthetic tendencies and genre trends, production conditions and career paths, film industry mechanisms, technological change, the role of government film policy and questions of diversity and inclusion. The analysis identifies a number of challenges, including diminishing viewership, chronic unprofitability, little public interest in most Swedish films and an escalating inability to compete in the digital media landscape, but it also suggests that the Swedish cinema institution has developed mechanisms to overcome some of these fundamental problems. Hence, a future erosion of the national cinema is not a foregone conclusion, but neither can its exceptional cultural status be taken for granted going forward.
