Sustainable pharma needs better plastic

The biopharmaceutical industry faces a new and increasingly urgent materials challenge: how to preserve the performance, sterility, and scalability benefits of plastics while materially reducing their carbon footprint and creating credible pathways for material recovery. Plastics are deeply embedded in modern bioprocessing, especially since the growth of single-use technologies that have helped the industry increase flexibility, reduce cross-contamination risk, and lower water and energy use relative to many conventional stainless-steel operations. At the same time, the reliance on fossil-derived polymers and the limited circularity of regulated bioprocessing materials have created a new sustainability imperative. The opportunity now is not to retreat from plastics, but to accelerate the development of sustainable plastics that are compatible with pharmaceutical quality requirements and industrial reality. This perspective paper argues that sustainable plastics have become a strategic need for biopharmaceutical manufacturing and a major innovation opportunity for the plastics value chain. It outlines the evolution of material use in bioprocessing, examines the carbon and circularity challenges associated with current polymer choices, and discusses practical pathways forward, including bio-based drop-in resins, improved ecodesign, product carbon footprint data, and longer-horizon materials such as polyhydroxyalkanoates. The paper concludes that the sustainable transformation of bioprocessing will increasingly depend on a systems approach that connects material innovation, product design, and end-of-life infrastructure.
