Sustainable development practices and SDG integration in brownfield redevelopment
Faezeh Bagheri-MoghaddamThis chapter examines how sustainable development principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be systematically integrated into brownfield redevelopment to transform derelict and contaminated land into socially inclusive, environmentally restored, and economically productive urban assets. Drawing on the triple bottom line framework of environmental repair, economic viability, and social well-being, the chapter demonstrates how brownfield reuse inherently advances multiple SDGs simultaneously from improved public health and clean water to climate action, decent work, and sustainable cities. It reviews the international, European, and UK policy frameworks that drive sustainable brownfield practice, including the EU Green Deal, the National Planning Policy Framework, and associated funding mechanisms. Innovative and eco-friendly remediation techniques spanning bioremediation, phytoremediation, in-situ chemical treatment, nature-based solutions, and circular material reuse are evaluated for their sustainability credentials. The chapter further addresses adaptive reuse of existing structures, climate-resilient design, green infrastructure integration, and the social imperatives of community engagement, affordable housing, economic inclusion, and environmental justice. It concludes by outlining how SDG-aligned monitoring frameworks, interdisciplinary collaboration, and knowledge-sharing networks can ensure that brownfield regeneration delivers transformative, long-lasting outcomes for urban communities.
