Sustainability indicators for the experimental fishing of Dissostichus eleginoides (Perciformes, Nototheniidae) in Ecuadorian waters

Abstract

The population status of Dissostichus eleginoides has been estimated from different sources as overexploited, at maximum sustainable yield (MSY), and in recovery. In 2017, experimental fishing for D. eleginoides began in Ecuadorian waters for a period of 5 years. The aim of this study was to assess the sustainability of the D. eleginoides fishery in Ecuadorian waters, using length-based indicators (LBIs). The database was provided by the Public Institute for Aquaculture and Fisheries Research. It contains information on total lengths (TLs), sex, maturity status (immature/mature), and fishing depths. The sustainability of the D. eleginoides fishery was assessed by considering the proportion of individuals fished below and above the length at sexual maturity and the recruitment length. In addition, LBIs were applied. A total of 5,265 individuals were collected. The average length was 128.1 cm TL in males and 136.5 cm TL in females. Sex ratio was higher in females (5:1). Lengths presented significant differences between years, areas, and fishing depths. The major proportion corresponded to adult individuals. LBI values were higher than the reference points of conservation, optimal yield, and MSY. Experimental fishing for D. eleginoides showed a healthy stock composed mainly of adult females.
