SURVIVORS AND TÜRKİYE’S INTENSIVE-EXTENSIVE EXPORT MARGINS DURING 2011-2022
Abdullah Emre Akel, Mustafa Çolak This study analyzes survivor exporters – firms that export continuously every year – in shaping Türkiye's intensive and extensive export margins from 2011 to 2022. Using Entrepreneur Information System (EIS) of Türkiye’s Ministry of Industry and Technology, which covers firm-product-market level data, we introduce a novel export decomposition method to capture the dynamics of intensive and extensive margins of exports, while using PPML to test hypotheses that are established based on related literature and our decomposition method. Results show that although survivor exporters constitute only 5% of Türkiye’s exporters portfolio during 2011-2022, they generated roughly 67% of Türkiye's total exports each year. Survivors dominate the intensive margin (≈84 % of exports) where they deliver 3.3 times more exports than occasional exporters after controlling for size, sector and technology intensity. On the other hand, occasional exporters dominate the extensive margin through new products and market entries. These findings conciliate mixed evidence in the analysis of intensive and extensive margins literature and suggest that export promotion policies should prioritize continuity over quantity of exporters.
