Abstract

Richter's hernia is a rare condition in horses and is characterised by incarceration of only the antimesenteric portion of the intestinal wall. Although most reported cases are associated with congenital umbilical defects, it may also occur secondary to traumatic abdominal wall disruption. We describe the surgical management of a traumatic Richter's hernia in a 2‐year‐old Mangalarga Marchador horse that developed acute focal umbilical swelling following abdominal trauma. Ultrasonography confirmed the diagnosis, and the horse underwent celiotomy with reduction of the incarcerated jejunal segment. Based on intraoperative viability assessment, we performed intestinal resection and an end‐to‐end jejunojejunostomy. The horse recovered uneventfully and was discharged 10 days after surgery.
