Supervising master’s students conducting qualitatively-focused research syntheses in a Japanese context
Eoin Jordan, Jason Kushnir, Sho KatoAbstract
This chapter reflects on the lead author’s experience of supervising two master’s students in conducting two separate qualitatively focused research synthesis dissertation projects, both of which were focused on the Japanese educational context. The two supervisees have contributed to this chapter as additional authors, to ensure that it presents a rounded and accurate view of supervisions. Key challenges faced during the dissertation projects are detailed in this chapter; these were overcome iteratively, through ongoing and open discussion between supervisees and supervisor. The chapter should be a useful resource for dissertation supervisors or master’s students considering undertaking qualitatively focused research syntheses, particularly those focused on a specific national context.
