Successful treatment of common bile duct obstruction in a cat using modified ‘drop‐in’ technique for bile duct transposition (choledochoduodenostomy)

Abstract

A cat presenting with extrahepatic biliary obstruction at the junction of the common bile duct and duodenum was treated surgically by transecting the duct proximal to the level of obstruction and re‐implanting it into the duodenum adjacent to the papilla. The underlying cause of the cholestatic disease was found to be inflammatory/infectious in nature, and the cat has been successfully managed medically since the time of the surgery, remaining alive and well 16 months later. This outcome suggests that this technique presents a viable alternative in suitable cases to currently more common measures such as bile duct stenting or cholecystoenterostomy.
