Study the Bacterial Distribution among Patients with Dental and Oral Infections

Background:
Dental caries, trauma, or dental operations can all cause dental infections when bacteria penetrate the pulp and spread to adjacent tissues.
Objective:
The study aimed to determine bacterial infections in patients with oral infections by biochemical tests, molecular methods, and antibiotic sensitivity.
Materials and Methods:
The study included 60 patients referred to specialized dentistry centers and private clinics, 28 females and 32 males, and 20 healthy adults as the control group. The age groups were between 15 and 55 years.
Results:
The result from bacterial isolation; in pericoronitis, a single culture showed
Streptococcus mutans
and
Staphylococcus epidermidis
at 50%. Apical periodontitis showed
Enterococcus faecalis
and
S. mutans
at 50%. Abscesses showed percentage of
Staphylococcus aureus
at 100%, all percentages of single infection 25%, while mixed culture in pericoronitis,
S. mutans
, and
Escherichia coli
showed 31%.
Klebsiella
and
S. aureus
25%.
S. aureus
and
S. mutans
12%.
S. mutans
and
Lactobacillus
13%
S. mutans
and
Klebsiella
13%.
S. epidermidis
and
E. coli
6%. Apical periodontitis showed
E. faecalis
with
Lactobacillus

6%. Finally, mixed culture showed

100% in the abscess infection.
Conclusions:
The most common bacterial isolates were
Streptococcus. Enterococcus
and the other gram-negative bacteria isolated from dental infections were
E. coli
,
Staphylococcus
, and
Klebsiella
. Concerning antimicrobial activity against
S. mutans
, they were resistance to bacitracin but sensitive to nalidixic acid and tobramycin.
