Students' attitudes toward elective disciplines (modules) in physical education and sports: a comparative analysis of survey results (2022–2024)

Ilya Belousov

The purpose of the study is to assess students' attitudes toward elective disciplines (modules) in physical education and sports based on an analysis of the homogeneity of response distributions from survey data collected over different years, and to substantiate the possibility of using the obtained results in the practice of implementing elective disciplines in physical education and sports at the university. Research methods and organization. A comparative study of survey data from first-year students of Tomsk Polytechnic University for the years 2022–2024 was conducted using a questionnaire reflecting students' attitudes toward elective disciplines in physical education and sports. Comparative analysis and methods of mathematical statistics were applied. Research results and conclusions. In most cases, there were no statistically significant differences in the distribution of responses among students from different years. Differences were identified in a few questions, but the effect size remained negligible. The established stability of attitudes toward elective disciplines in physical education and sports among students from different enrollment years makes it possible to extrapolate the obtained conclusions to subsequent cohorts of students and to predict their response to changes in course offerings. Furthermore, it allows for the application of Pearson's chi-squared test (χ²) to compare the responses of control and experimental groups when testing new methodologies, in order to assess reactions to the implemented approaches. Local differences in responses confirm the need for regular updating of survey data to adjust the educational process in accordance with changes in the student population.
