STRONGER TOGETHER: THE ONE HEALTH ROADMAP TO A RABIES-FREE WORLD
Saurabh SharRabies remains one of the clearest examples of a disease that can be prevented with tools that are already available. The World Health Organization estimates about 59,000 human rabies deaths each year and around 99% of human infections are associated with infected dogs. The practical challenge is therefore not the absence of a solution, but reaching the required level of vaccination, surveillance, bite management and public participation in every setting. A One Health approach brings veterinary services, human health services, local government, laboratories, researchers and communities into one response system. This article discusses how sustained dog vaccination, rapid post-exposure care, digital surveillance, improved access to biologicals, community participation and emerging approaches such as oral dog vaccination could support the 2030 elimination goal. The emphasis is on practical implementation and future-ready systems rather than technology alone.
