Stronger Together: Closing India's Rabies Gap Through One Health

Shiv Varan Singh, Nripendra Singh, Ajay K. Rai, Chayna S. Mahapatra

Rabies is the only common infection that is almost 100% fatal once symptoms begin, yet almost 100% preventable when the right steps are taken in time. It kills an estimated 59,000 people worldwide every year, and up to 99% of human cases are acquired from the bite of an infected dog. A large share of these deaths occurs in India, where free-roaming dogs, delayed wound care and incomplete vaccination still combine into a silent public-health emergency. The theme of World Rabies Day 2026, observed on 28 September, is "Stronger Together". It carries a simple scientific message: no single sector can eliminate rabies alone. The virus moves between animals and people, so the solution must move across veterinary clinics, hospitals, municipal bodies, schools and households. This article explains where India stands, how the disease develops, what must be done after a bite, and why a coordinated One Health response is the only realistic route to India's goal of ending dog-mediated human rabies by 2030.
