Strengthening Japan’s drug discovery and medical research ecosystem: AMED’s innovation challenge
Hitoshi NakagamaAbstract
Japan continues to face challenges in translating life science and medical research into innovative medicines and healthcare technologies. The Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), established in 2015, plays a central role in bridging basic research and practical application. To address gaps between research and development stages and to promote practical application of promising technological seeds from academia, AMED adopted five strategic priorities under its Third Mid- to Long-Term Plan (2025-2029). (1) Strengthen coordination across AMED programs to ensure seamless support from basic research to societal implementation. (2) Promote academia-industry collaboration and technology transfer even at early stages of development, including through the AND-E initiative. (3) Support creative, high-impact basic research and further strengthen innovative research by integration of cutting-edge technologies. (4) Advance international research collaboration, multi-regional clinical trials and support for start-ups, with the AMED Global Hub (Boston) serving as a gateway connecting the Japanese drug discovery ecosystem with global partners. (5) Accelerate digital transformation by leveraging AI, quantum technologies and robust research databases. Taking this integrated approach, AMED aims to revitalize Japan’s drug discovery ecosystem, nurture globally competitive talent, and build a world-leading innovation ecosystem that translates scientific excellence into tangible benefits for patients and society.
