Purpose

Youth mental ill-health is a pressing global challenge that frequently predicts downstream physical comorbidities. Despite increased clinical provision, a significant public health implementation gap remains, driven by stigma and low mental health literacy. This case study aims to explore peer-to-peer storytelling as a scalable, preventive intervention to bridge this gap and promote holistic wellbeing among young people.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on a comprehensive 10-year evidence base (2016–2026), including four mixed-methods program evaluations, a cluster randomised controlled trial and published qualitative research, this paper synthesises the systemic impact of the Australian batyr model across secondary and tertiary education settings.

Findings

Safeguarded, lived-experience storytelling significantly improves youth mental health literacy and help-seeking intentions while reducing isolation and stigma. The model is mutually beneficial, fostering self-acceptance among storytellers and creating enabling conditions for holistic self-care, which acts as a critical protective factor against risky physical health behaviours. However, to ensure sustainability, universal programs should be complemented by whole-of-setting approaches, such as embedded curriculum initiatives, to scaffold educator capacity.

Practical implications

The batyr model provides a proven, community-led blueprint for policy and investment to address the public mental health implementation gap.

Originality/value

By leveraging peer connection to promote mental flourishing, this paper demonstrates how storytelling serves as a powerful upstream intervention in the journey toward youth mental and physical health integration.
