“Still Hanging? A Revisitation of Ghosts From the Past and the (Re)Authorization of Human Dignity in Americanism ( or Motions of Discovery )”

Bryant Keith Alexander, Mary E. Weems

In this project, the two authors further theorize on a collaborative spiriting-writing activity that pivots on the public story of a Black male body found “hung/hanging” near a public roadway in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In three movements, the authors tease through politics of the happening in relation to a history of hanging Black bodies against the backdrop of the current race-based political climate in the United States, with wholesale commentary on the notion of bartering human (in)dignity in a shifting sense of Americanism.
