STI and DUI innovation modes: a bibliometric analysis
Moisés Hernández Ruiz, Odette Chams-AnturiPurpose
This study analyzes the evolution of scientific production in the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) and Doing, Using and Interacting (DUI) innovation modes over the last 19 years, and how these concepts have evolved and consolidated within the research community.
Design/methodology/approach
A bibliometric analysis was conducted by using data from Scopus and Web of Science databases. Bibliometrix and VOSviewer tools were used to assess 97 relevant studies to identify the publication trends of authors and journals, collaboration networks, and thematic patterns in the field.
Findings
The results demonstrate the steady growth in STI and DUI innovation modes and identify a number of thematic clusters related to conceptual development, integration of innovation modes within the research field, firm-level innovation strategies, and emerging themes such as eco-innovation and regional innovation systems. The analysis highlights how STI and DUI innovation modes are being used as complementary innovation approaches across sectors and institutions.
Originality/value
This work is a longitudinal bibliometric map of studies on STI and DUI innovation modes and can provide insight into the intellectual framework of research, research direction, and themes. With nearly two decades of research history analyzed in this study, the STI-DUI framework was shown to be clear and a valuable input into hybrid innovation and how it is reflected in the innovation system dynamics.
