Background:
Densah Burs are nonexcavating drills which densify the bone through osseodensification in the atrophic mandible. Osseodensification increases the primary stability by physically interlocking the bone and implant, along with osteoblast nucleation on instrumented bone close to the implant. The aim of the study was to evaluate clinically and radiographically the efficacy of Densah bur-mediated osseodensification and simultaneous implant placement in posterior mandibular ridges with Seibert’s class I defect.
Materials and Methods:
Nine patients with 15 edentulous posterior mandibular sites with Seibert’s class I defects were selected. During the first stage, ridge split was performed using piezosurgery, followed by the second surgery 4 weeks later, wherein ridge expansion was performed using Densah drills along with implant placement. The alveolar ridge width and average bone density were evaluated clinically and radiographically (using cone beam computed tomography) at baseline and again 3 months after the second surgery, corresponding to a total follow-up period of 4 months.
Results:
Clinically and radiographically, the mean difference in ridge width from baseline to 3 months postsecond surgery at the crest, 2 mm and 4 mm below the crest was 5.20 ± 0.00 mm, 5.13 ± 0.08 mm, and 5.40 ± 0.03 mm, respectively, which was statistically significant (
Conclusion:
Staged lateral ridge expansion followed by osseodensification and simultaneous implant placement is an effective method to manage Seibert’s class I defect in posterior mandibular ridges.
