Sprachliches Experiment im absurden Drama des Theaters Divadlo Na Zábradlí und des Schauspielclubs Činoherní klub der 1960er Jahre

Hana Svobodová, David Kroča

Summary

This study examines the linguistic aspects of Czech absurdist drama in the 1960 s. It focuses in particular on plays that premiered between 1960 and 1969 at the Prague theater Divadlo Na Zábradlí and the drama club Činoherní klub . The analysis shows that the linguistic structure of these plays often has an experimental character and deliberately subverts conventional language use and traditional forms of expression. Theatrical texts from this period use language not only as a means of communication but also as an instrument for creating ambiguity and chaos. The language appears fragmented, repetitive, and seemingly meaningless, thereby reflecting the absurdity of human existence as well as the loss of meaning in communication within a world devoid of fixed rules and values
