Spiritual Monachopsis: Conceptualization, Scale Development, and Psychometric Analysis

Süheyb Okur
Objective: In the modern era, individuals increasingly experience alienation from their religious environments, suffering from a profound sense of "homelessness" in their faith worlds. Based on the concept of "Monachopsis" (the subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place), this study aims to develop the "Spiritual Monachopsis Scale" (SMS) to measure the spiritual projection of this phenomenon and to examine its psychometric properties in a sample of young adults.Method: The scale development study was conducted on a total of 453 undergraduate students (Pilot: 163, Main: 290) studying at Bayburt University in the 2025-2026 academic year. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficient, and Pearson correlation analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Results: EFA results indicated that the scale had a three-factor structure (Disconnection from the Divine, Alienation from the Belief System, Religious Social Alienation) explaining 57.66% of the variance. CFA results confirmed that this 18-item structure showed a strong fit with the data (ꭓ2/df = 2.357, RMSEA = .068, CFI = .936). The overall reliability (Cronbach's Alpha) of the scale was calculated as .93. Furthermore, within the scope of criterion-related validity, a positive and significant correlation (r = .633**) was found between the SMS and the Negative Religious Coping scale. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that the Spiritual Monachopsis Scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used to determine individuals' levels of spiritual homelessness and alienation.
