ABSTRACT

Volatile aldehydes, especially from cigarette, pose potential threats to human health. However, the current strategies failed to selectively adsorb aldehyde hazards, indiscriminately removing all the substances to reduce smoking satisfaction. In this work, we have uniformly localized layered double hydroxides (LDH) onto the cellulose acetate (CA) fiber to prepare LDH@CA composites based on the hydrogen bonds between the ester carbonyl groups of CA and the hydroxyl groups of LDH. The acquired hierarchical structure exhibited abundant hydroxyl groups, forming hydrogen bonds with aldehydes for a specific adsorption. Note that 73.03% of formaldehyde and 86.23% of acetaldehyde could be effectively removed by the composite. More importantly, the composites could selectively remove the aldehydes without reducing nicotine in the cigarette. Accordingly, we could use the composite to maintain the smoking satisfactory while removing hazardous aldehydes. Therefore, we have realized the selective and specific adsorption of aldehydes by LDH‐modified CA based on the hydrogen bonds. It is expected that the as‐prepared low‐cost, and environmentally friendly composite could find more applications for air purification.
