Species‐Specific Microsatellites Reveal Parthenogenesis in a Stingray

Kevin Andrew Feldheim, Heather Terrell, Skylar Snowden, Paul Moylett, Allan Marshall

ABSTRACT

Parthenogenesis has been described in several species of elasmobranchs, mostly from those kept in human care. Using a set of 14 newly developed species‐specific microsatellites, we describe parthenogenesis in a honeycomb ray, Himantura uarnak , from the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. This represents the third case of parthenogenesis in the batoids.
